Reports emerging from Spain today suggest that Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos is 100% committed to leaving the club this summer. Amidst speculation, Manchester United are believed to have placed a bid in the region of £28.6 million.
The Spanish centre back has expressed his desire to move to England and Manchester United, in particular. In doing this, he has also said he wishes to contact no other club over a move, giving United fans greater reason to believe the signing will take place.
Rumours surrounding the future of Ramos have been building over the past few days with United quickly emerging as front runners for his signature.
Real Madrid’s disappointing end to the season, contributed to by their failure to retain their La Liga and Champions League titles, must be seen as a large reason for the defender wanting to leave.
Besides this, it has also been said that the focus on the contracts of younger players within the squad has been a cause for Ramos’ unrest.
With Rafa Benitez preparing for his first season in charge at the Bernabeu, he will be keen to organise his squad quickly to give himself a better opportunity to plan ahead. With this in mind, he will hope to finalise any outgoings as quickly as the incomings meaning the Ramos transfer could happen quickly.
Having said this, Benitez risks losing support from the famously brutal Real Madrid supporters by letting a fan favourite leave so easily.
As such a loyal servant to the club, it is unlikely Ramos will find himself subject to heavy criticism from fans of the Spanish giants. At 29 years old, his wish for a different challenge must be respected given how much he has offered to his club.
If the deal goes through, as it is expected to, Manchester United will be getting a hugely experienced player and winner. Ramos will bring much needed stability to the United defence and will be important in the development of younger defenders such as Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
His presence will help add quality to the spine of the team which appears to be Van Gaal’s intentions in this summer transfer market. He offers a passion to the game that other United players will benefit from.
Ultimately, he has won it all at the highest level and will help United take a big step towards challenging for the Premier League title.
